Central America Makes Significant Strides in Air Quality Monitoring
Panama City, Panama September 29, 2009. CATHALAC, with support from the US EPA, NASA, Battelle and the University of Panama, jointly hosted a regional workshop on "Communicating Information on Air Quality in Central America" in Panama City, Panama. The workshop occurred from September 10-11, 2009, in the framework of the US EPA-funded "Urban Air Quality Management Program in Central America" project which involves CATHALAC, Battelle Memorial Institute, Sonoma Technology, Inc., the University of Panama, and other partners, and had the participation of some 40 representatives, from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, and the USA.

Central American countries exchange experiences on Regional Environmental Information Strategy

The Project was developed in the context of an Environmental Impact Assessment System Regional Strategy

San Jose, Costa Rica, 22 September, 2009. The Participating Countries of the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) Environmental Cooperation Agreement (ECA) moved forward in the development of the Environmental Information Systems Regional Strategy which aims to support citizens’ participation in environmental management processes by strengthening the existing information systems of the countries in the region.

CATHALAC fortalece capacidades de líderes y profesionales ambientales en la región latinoamericana.

Del 20 de al 24 de julio de 2009, se realizó, por segunda ocasión, en el Centro Regional de Capacitaciones  de CATHALAC, el Curso Internacional de Modelación de Caudales Ecológicos dirigido a profesionales latinoamericanos provenientes de Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador y Panamá.

Pioneer student group from UAHuntsville complete intensive summer course in CATHALAC

Huntsville studentsChristian White, Joshua Smith and Jonathan Fairman arrived to CATHALAC for an intensive 2 week summer course in Panama as a result of the recent cooperation agreement established between the UAHuntsville, and CATHALAC to collaborate in scientific research and educational outreach and exchange. This new academic effort is done in collaboration with Tom Sever, Professor of Atmospheric Science of UAHuntsville.as well as Dan Irwin, Principal Investigator of SERVIR(Monitoring and Visualization System).  SERVIR is implemented by CATHALAC in Central America through the integration of earth observations, satellite imagery, and forecasting models.

Participantes del TallerCiudad de Panamá, 4 de Junio de 2009. El taller de inicio para el “Proyecto del Sistema de Coordinación Mesoamericano de Información Territorial para la Reducción de Riesgo de Desastres Naturales (SIT)”, coordinado por Panamá en el marco del Proyecto Mesoamerica, inició el pasado 4 de Junio en la capital panameña como parte de las actividades orientadas a dar cumplimiento a los acuerdos de los Presidentes y Jefes de Estado de la región.
