Panamá, 19 de junio de 2008- CATHALAC, recibió a Lissette Braman y Sara Abdelrahim quienes realizarán una pasantía enfocada al área de desastres naturales durante los próximos dos meses. Ambas son estudiantes del programa de Maestría de Clima y Sociedad del Instituto Internacional de Investigación del  Clima y Sociedad (IRI, por sus siglas en inglés) de la prestigiosa Universidad de Columbia, de Nueva York, EEUU.

Panamá 6 de Junio de 2008- CATHALAC y el Instituto para la Investigación Internacional sobre el Clima y la Sociedad (IRI, por sus siglas en inglés) desarrollaron el Taller sobre nuevas Herramientas para el Manejo del Riesgo Climático, dirigido a miembros de la Federación Internacional de Sociedades de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja (IFRC, por sus siglas en inglés) incluyendo miembros de organizaciones que trabajan en el área de desastres y desarrollo en América Latina y el Caribe.

Specialists from the IAI Training Institute visit CATHALAC

El Centro del Agua del Trópico Húmedo para América Latina y el Caribe (CATHALAC), como socio clave del Instituto Interamericano para la Investigación del Cambio Global (IAI), apoyó con la planificación y co-organizó el Taller "Instituto de Capacitación en  la Gestión de Información" del IAI, realizado en la Ciudad de Panamá, del 25 al 29 de febrero de 2008. En adición a la presentación sobre las lecciones aprendidas en la implementación del Sistema Regional de Visualización y Monitoreo -SERVIR (implementado por CATHALAC, conjuntamente con NASA, USAID  y otros socios), CATHALAC recibió a los 30 participantes del taller en sus instalaciones.

Hosono presents Ambassador CATHALAC Japanese initiative on Climate Change, "Cool Earth 50"

Panamá – 28 de mayo de 2008 – CATHALAC recibió la visita oficial del Embajador Akio Hosono, Asistente Especial del Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Japón, en la que el funcionario presentó a Directivos y Científicos de CATHALAC, la iniciativa japonesa para el Cambio Climático y la Cooperación Internacional, titulada “Cool Earth 50” 3 propuestas, 3 principios, mismos que contienen las directrices de la política medioambiental de Japón.

CATHALAC and UNU-INWEH, will establish a United Nations Water Virtual Learning Centre

Panama City, 26 February, 2008 – The Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) and the United Nations University International Network on Water, Environment and Health (UNU- INWEH), signed an Agreement of Cooperation to jointly establish and operate a United Nations Water Virtual Learning Centre (WVLC) at CATHALAC to service the needs of the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – 26 de mayo de 2008 – CATHALAC presentó su plan de trabajo y los avances obtenidos por este Organismo Internacional en materia de cambio climático y ambiente en la región, durante la Cumbre Presidencial sobre Cambio Climático y Medio Ambiente, Centroamérica y El Caribe, Honduras 2008, celebrada en la ciudad de San Pedro Sula, del 26 al 28 de mayo de 2008.

CATHALAC and UNEP-CEP host Caribbean Workshop on Modeling Non-Point Sources of Pollution

CATHALAC and the United Nations Environmental Programme’s Caribbean Environmental Programme (UNEP-CEP) through the Regional Activity Center for for the Protocol Concerning Land-based Sources of Pollution (LBS/RAC-CIMAB) held a regional workshop on “Spatial Modeling of Non-Point Sources of Pollution and Erosion in the Caribbean." The workshop was held at CATHALAC’s Regional Training Center in Panama City, Panama from February 18-20, 2008. During the workshop, the eighteen (18) participants – hailing from across the wider Caribbean – learned a variety of techniques for estimation of discharges of pollutants and sediment into the Caribbean Sea , utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) applications such as the ArcGIS 9.2 platform developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).

Headway in Mesoamerican Initiative on Natural Disasters Prevention and Mitigation of the Puebla Plan

Panama City, PANAMA – 14 February, 2008 – The Mesoamerican Initiative on Natural Disasters Prevention and Mitigation (IMPMDN) of the Puebla Panama Plan (PPP), held a work meeting at CATHALAC's facilities to coordinate the development of the Mesoamerican Territorial Information Atlas for Sustainable Development and Natural Disasters Risk Reduction and to review this year's strategy in order to speed its implementation.

McGill students present the results of its innovative CATHALAC Internships

Current Status of Mangroves, their management and the fishery in Panama

El 24 de abril del presente año, el Centro del Agua del Trópico Húmedo para América Latina y el Caribe (CATHALAC), presentó los resultados del proyecto “Diagnóstico del Estado Actual de los Manglares, su Manejo y su Relación con la Pesquería en Panamá”, con el objetivo de determinar la situación actual de los manglares desde el punto de vista ecológico, económico y social, en la costa del Pacífico de Panamá, específicamente en áreas amenazadas de la provincia de Darién, Golfo de San Miguel; en la provincia de Veraguas, Golfo de Montijo; y en la provincia de Chiriquí, Golfo de Chiriquí.

The Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean, *CATHALAC), within the framework of the capacities strengthtening program for the  National Agencies of the National Authority of the Environment in the management of hydrographic river basins and climatic change, the denominated course is being carried out in the province of Chiriquí: "Elaboration of Environmental Projects”, from the 22 to the 25 of January of 2008.

Satellite Meteorology Expert Visiting CATHALAC

Panama City, Panama- 27 March, 2008- 
One of the world’s leading experts in the field of satellite meteorology nowcasting, Dr. John Mecikalski of the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH), is visiting the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) this week. Dr. Mecikalski’s visit is in the context of the USAID Global Development Alliance (GDA)-sponsored “Mainstreaming Climate Indices and Weather Derivatives into Decision-Making for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic” project which CATHALAC is jointly implementing with NASA, UAH, Cable & Wireless-Panama and the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).

Third Meeting of the Directive Committee of the Project

The Third Meeting of the Directive Committee of the Project "Integration of Climate Index and Time in decision making for the adaptation to the Climatic Change in Central America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic", in which they participate representing in the Agency of the United States for International Development (USAID), the National Administration of Aeronautics and the Space (NASA), CATHALAC and the Environmental Ministry of the El Salvador.

CATHALAC and NOAA expand the FIRE Detection System

Panama City, Panama- 27 February, 2008- The Hazard Mapping System-HMS, a system that detects forest fires in the region, was installed this week in the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The system operates within the Regional Visualization and Monitoring System (SERVIR), implemented by CATHALAC, and covers the regions of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Central America prepares to Monitor Air Quality

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA – January 14, 2008 – Central American countries will be able to monitor air quality utilizing satellite information and surface observation centers thanks to the technological and scientific support of the USEPA(U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), CATHALAC, Battelle Institute, USAID (United States Agency for International Development), and CCAD (Central American Commission for Environment ad Development).
